The North Gondar Zone Food Security Office honors us with its prestigious Certificate of Recognition. This acknowledges Walia Charity Association members’ unwavering dedication to empowering vulnerable communities, notably single-parent households, women, elderly, and crisis-affected residents during North Gondar’s devastating drought and landslide.
We humbly thank the North Gondar Zone Food Security Office for this esteemed recognition. This honor validates our tireless efforts and inspires continued community upliftment.
We began by providing essential food support, such as wheat flour and oil, and sanitary essentials to vulnerable senior families in Adiarkay, North Gondar Zone. Our name, “Walia,” honors the community’s inspiring resilience.
The war between the Tigrayan forces and the Ethiopian government brought immense hardship to countless Ethiopians. In 2021 and 2022, the town of Debark in North Gondar saw an influx of over 30,000 people with children and senior adults seeking refuge from the conflict. These families arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs, facing unimaginable challenges to rebuild their lives. The Walia Charity Association recognized the desperate situation and stepped in to help. We provided essential aid to these families, many of whom were single parents struggling to care for their children alone.
Through our war displacement outreach in 2022-2023, we assisted around 12,000 displaced children, women, and seniors with food donations in Debark, 80 kilometers from their hometown. Partnering with our Gondar branch, we provided vital aid to internally displaced persons over the past three years, helping mitigate the consequences of conflict and displacement.
On July 29, 2022, the Government Communication Office of Adi Arkai District reported that the Walia Charity Society of North America donated essential supplies to displaced individuals in Debarak City, North Gondar Zone, Ethiopia. The donation, valued at 420,000 birr, included flour and mattresses.
Mr. Mulukun Azanaw, local chairman of the Walia Charity Association, expressed solidarity with the displaced, stating, “Your displacements are ours, your pains are ours”. The organization distributed over 100 kilograms of flour and 20 mattresses to families and 15 kilograms per head.
Evacuee Mrs. Ababa Demle praised US resident supporters for their generosity, saying, “Despite challenges, they brought aid to us in need.” She received 15 kilograms of teff flour and expressed gratitude.
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Aqernesh Tagabu thanked for 15 kilograms of flour, emphasizing the timely support. She urged continued assistance until they returned home.
Salamyihun Mulat, Head of Food Security for North Gondar Zone, acknowledged the psychological impact on locals, particularly in the Amhara region. Over 142,270 displaced individuals sought shelter in refugee camps and surrounding communities.
The official thanked supporters on behalf of the zone and evacuees, stressing the need for ongoing aid due to the increasing number of displaced persons.
Notably, this marks the fifth relief effort by the Walia Charity Association. Two weeks prior, they provided flour and materials to displaced individuals in Zarema City.
